It’s an annual family tradition to devote an entire day of July to the strawberry. For the year of 2018, Strawberry Day happened to be July 9th. Tradition calls for a morning of strawberry picking in local fields, an afternoon in the kitchen, and a very special evening meal.
After a morning of picking and a quick stop at Walmart for supplies, we headed home to get cooking.
Strawberry Freezer Jam is the name of the game, and we have been playing for over 10 years. The recipe is nothing special. We simply use the recipe from the Certo Liquid Pectin box, but Grandma and my Aunt Rita have it down to a science after all these years.
This year I decided to try making Strawberry Jalapeno Jam. Click here for the recipe. The jam turned out great. The jalapeno adds a little kick, and a whole lot of dimension to the plain strawberry jam.
In addition to jam, we freeze some berries to use for smoothies and recipes throughout the year. The remainder of the strawberries are eaten fresh.
Once the kitchen was clean, we moved on to my favorite part of Strawberry Day- dinner. On Strawberry Day we have strawberry shortcake FOR DINNER. That’s right- not for dessert, not for a snack. No, no, no. We have this deliciously sweet dish as our main meal.
It’s the perfect treat after a long day of hard work. Having dessert for dinner sure is a nice little charm of life, isn’t it?
